How to use asensei with external TVs, monitors and speakers, can I use Airplay? The good news is that if you want to use asensei with an external TV, monitor or speaker then you have some great options for doing so, however there are issues using asensei with Airplay so we don't recommend it and we explain further in this article.
What is the difference between Airplay and Screen Mirroring?
It's useful to understand what is the difference between Airplay and Screen Mirroring. Airplay is Apple's proprietary way of sharing media from your iPhone or iPad with an external device, using your WiFi network as the connection. It's primarily designed for single streams of media, such as a simple video (with audio) or music. Screen Mirroring shares everything on your iPhone or iPad screen with an external device (including any audio) such as a compatible TV or Monitor using a common WiFi network.
How do I play the asensei app on an external TV or monitor?
The best way to display the asensei app on an external TV is to use Screen Mirroring, this will ensure that all of the visuals and the audio from the asensei app will be faithfully reproduced on your TV.
We don't recommend using Airplay to display the asensei app on an external TV or monitor (nor for audio).
To use Screen mirroring you will need to have a compatible TV or monitor OR a use a 3rd party devices such as an Apple TV or a Roku stick that supports Apple Screen Mirroring.
How do I enable Screen Mirroring while using asensei?
To enable screen mirroring you can use the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. Swipe down from the top right of the screen - you don't need to have any app open, but it will also work if you do - this will display Control Center.
On the control center screen you should look for the screen mirror icon, which looks like two screens - see the image below - and tap that icon.
When you tap that icon you will see a list of available devices for screen mirroring, shown in the image below. Choose the one that you wish to use.
You may need to ensure that the external device has been setup correctly which may mean you are asked to enter a passcode to verify the external device.
What are the limitations of using asensei with Screen Mirroring?
The main limitation of screen mirroring is that anything that is displayed on your phone also appears on your external screen - so if a notification comes in, or if you switch apps your TV screen will show that.
You will need to make sure that both the iPhone or iPad running the asensei app and the external screen are connected to the same WiFi network and that there is a strong connection at both ends, otherwise the results can be frozen or glitchy video and/or audio.
Using asensei on an external TV or monitor without Screen Mirroring? Use HDMI.
If you wish to use asensei with an external TV or monitor, but your display devices don't support Apple Screen Mirroring then the best solution is to use a Lightning to HDMI adaptor (shown below) and an HDMI cable. This will mirror the screen to your TV or monitor automatically and also send audio via the TV or Monitor's built in speakers.
Simply plug a Lightning port to HDMI adaptor into the iPhone or iPad, then connect your HDMI cable to the adaptor and to the TV. Depending upon your setup you may need a fairly long cable.
One major advantage of this type of setup is that you are not at the mercy of WiFi networks which can be an issue with Airplay, poor WiFi network quality can result in glitchy or delayed video/audio
Most of the Lightning to HDMI adaptors will also allow you to charge your phone while you connect it to a TV or Monitor.
Using Airplay to share asensei audio with an external TV or Monitor
asensei is not compatible with Airplay for video and audio display on an external TV or Monitor. Instead you should use screen mirroring as explained above.
The reason for this is that the asensei app makes use of a number of different audio and visual streams, including music, coach audio, the asensei coach instructions, coach videos, on-screen workout stats, progress bar and informational cards. So asensei does not currently work reliably with Airplay to an external TV or monitor, as Airplay is primarily designed for single stream media (such as a video with it's associated audio track).
Screen Mirroring by contrast shares all of these different streams of information and is a faithful representation of your iPhone or iPad screen so is the recommended way to use asensei with an external screen.
Using Airplay to share asensei audio with an external Speaker
asensei is not compatible with Airplay for sending audio to an external speaker. The best alternative is to use an external Bluetooth speaker or headphones.
The reason for this is that the asensei app makes use of a number of different audio (and visual, see below) streams, including music, coach audio, the asensei coach instructions and sound effects. As a result asensei does not currently work reliably with Airplay to an external speaker, as Airplay is primarily designed for single stream media. If you try connecting asensei to an external speaker via Airplay you will find erratic behaviour which causes some audio streams to be absent.
