In 2025 the WaterRower Performance Ergometer has undergone a big upgrade, meaning that it can now connect directly to apps like asensei rowing.
The WaterRower Performance Ergometer uses a 'smart pulley' to more accurately calculate your performance metrics. By directly measuring force and stroke length, the Performance Ergometer calculates your power output with greater accuracy than the regular WaterRowers, independent of water level, bungee tension etc.
The 'smart pulleys' in the WaterRower Performance Ergometers are supplied by their partner, SmartRow and can also be purchased separately and retrofitted to other WaterRower models.
It's important to understand that there are two different types of SmartRow:
Original SmartRow pulley system - the pulley has led lights in the centre, underneath the handle strap. This device will only connect directly to the SmartRow app.
New, PowerPulley system - compatible with asensei rowing, LED lights are on the right hand side of the pulley wheel.
How do I connect a WaterRower Performance Ergometer to asensei rowing?
To connect a WaterRower PerformanceErgometer to asensei rowing you simply start your asensei rowing workout, then at the connection screen pull the handle once to turn on the PowerPulley and it will connect automatically to asensei rowing.
Troubleshooting connections from WaterRower Performance Ergometer to asensei rowing app
The PowerPulley can only connect to one app at a time, and it starts to advertise whenever you pull the handle, so ensure that nothing else connects to it before using asensei rowing.
Make sure that other apps are not connecting to the PerformanceErgometer. Apps may sometimes run in the background so make sure the likes of the SmartRow app is not active, even in the background it may connect automatically when you start rowing. It's best to kill other apps that may connect, not just close them.
To kill an app on iOS, swipe up from the bottom of the screen until the app switcher appears, then pause. Then locate the app of interest, such as SmartRow, and drag it off the top of the screen to kill it.
The SmartRow app does also allow secondary apps to connect to the PowerPulley via a rebroadcast to a second mobile device - but note asensei rowing is NOT compatible with this method so ensure you do not have the SmartRow app running on your mobile device when using asensei rowing.
How do I tell which model of WaterRower Performance Ergometer I have?
To connect your WaterRower Performance Ergometer directly to asensei rowing, you must ensure that you have the latest models, which incorporate the PowerPulley from SmartRow.
On the latest WaterRower Performance Ergometer models the PowerPulley LED light is on the right-hand side of the pulley as shown in the image below:
The older model SmartRow has LED lights around the centre of the pulley, underneath the handle strap. These older models will not connect to the asensei rowing app.
